Crafts, what do you like to make?
« on: January 26, 2019, 12:28:26 pm »
I am mainly known for my beadwork but also am into crochet, needlepoint, embroidery, painting, silk work and jewelry design as well as a few more things. Lately I have found aluminum jump rings in all hues of the rainbow so have gotten back into chainmaile. They are a lot easier to use and the designs can be infinite

I can draw and paint a little but don't have the patience for the rest. Wish I did though.

I write a little, and I guess I've started a new career as an author.

My current project is studying the themes of life, love, and loss and recovery. I am having fun with it. Here is a little sample:
Quote
Do you know the difference between a great night, a good night, and a bad night when you have PTSD?

On a great night, you don't dream, or at least you don't remember your dreams, or your dreams are the usual bright and nonsensical olio that they are for most people. A good night is when you sit bolt upright in the night, shivering, with the cold and oily fright sweat oozing down your rib cage and your screams echoing in the corridors of your mind. And a bad night is when your screams **** the night, echoing down real corridors and sending the cats running for their lives.

About two weeks after Angel and Terri moved me in, I had a bad night.

I heard four feet hit the floor, a startled, "Hank?!", from up the hall, and the sounds of people running. I caught a ragged breath as the door swung open and the star-lit corridor backlit two figures coming through. "Hank? Are you all right?", said Angel. "Yes. No. I don't know", I moaned, "the nightmare . . . ."

"Oh Honey", said Terri, "is there anything we can do? Would it help if we held you?" "It will", decided Angel, "so get in bed with Hank on that side and I'll crawl in over here. But you'll need to sleep skinny, mister."

"I'm sorry --" "No, don't be it's --" "not like you set out to get --" "PTSD this bad, but we can --" "help you deal with it", the two women in bed with me said, finishing each other's thoughts. I felt the twin mounds of Terri's boobs pressing into my back as she hugged me tight from behind, and Angel's breath softly tickled the hairs at my temple as she got in as close as she could, facing me. "Good night, Hank", she whispered, "sleep well", as Terri whispered, "Sleep well, Honey."

I have never slept so well in my life.

I awoke to birdsong, gently lifting the ruptured silence of the night, and I could see the corridor outside the opened door was palely lit with the rosy first light of dawn. I literally could not remember the last time I had slept in so late. I had been having quite a few good nights for quite a while. I felt a soft kiss just behind my ear and Terri's whispered, "Good morning Honey". "good morning, Terri", I whispered back, "what time is it?" "It doesn't matter, Hank", murmured Angel, "It's Sunday and we don't have anything going on right now." "How long have you been awake, Angel?" "I don't think I really ever went to sleep." "I am so sorry I woke you and Terri up last night." "Don't be", said Terri, "and can we talk about this some more in a few minutes? I gotta pee." "Sure", and, "don't let me stand in your way", we said, and Terri disengaged her arm from my chest and flung the covers back. "Scootch back a little, Hank", said Angel, and when I did she rolled over and backed firmly up to me in the little-spoon position.

As Terri rounded the end of the bed I suddenly realized the reason I could see the Patek Phillipe strength, accuracy, and precision of her stride so clearly was because she was naked. "Did you forget something?", I asked, and she stopped to look back over her shoulder and say, "No, I don't think I did." That drew a snicker from Angel, and Terri winked and went on into the bathroom. The sound of water splashing into water rolled through the open door almost immediately. "Terri?", I said, and she responded, "Don't worry, Honey. You've already seen the goods, or at least are about to." Angel snickered again as the unseen toilet flushed then the water started running into the sink. Then she sobered, looked up and behind at me, and said, "Hank, we need to talk."

I would enjoy seeing more creations from the male members. This thread has always been heavy on the distaff side.
Maybe someone is proud of the DIY retaining wall in the back yard. Or a fish pond, or some metal, wood, leather working.

Ok, I'll try this again, from my PC, because my "smart phone", is just to damn "intelligent" for my old school arse…

I enjoy making lamp work beads and flame work vessels and assorted objects.
I'm really into gravity designs, odd shapes and surface designs when it comes to beads - they're not your grandma's kinda old fashioned styles, but I try to go for unisex designs and SouthWestern themes.

ETA: The base color for this was a simple light translucent blue, and all of the surface colors were made with a single
rod of Doublehelexglassworks' , with the rods being the original "Chronos" edition of their collection assorment.
The different colors all come from changing the flame settings (just like with borosilicate glass) - going between neutral, striking, or reduction by adjusting the O2 and propane levels.

This was actually made on a large bore mandrel, and as such had to be completed in a single setting, or it would shatter if allowed to cool and then be reintroduced into the flame. It was a Christmas present this year for my Dad.
When free sculpting with glass (using no metal attatchments) it can be set down in mid project, and returned to at the sculptor's convenience. ;)

I have a friend that is into glass and tried to get me interested in making beads it seemed too much to do that was too deadly with both hands and feet at the same time. I love the straws though and the idea of the designs that can be cut like cookie dough.

Muriel, I'm not one of the men folk, but can the somewhat "masculine" projects of a classic Tomboy count?

I started doing fiberglass work with my grandma's neighbor when I was 13.
We took a 14' V-hull boat and built a 36' shrimp boat out of it; after that I spent years working for an older couple who were building/running a soft shell crab hatchery, and glassed 16 tanks with over 1/4" deep layers of hand layout fiberglass. I kept working for them part time for 20 years after I'd started lab work, and they were like grand parents to me.
Anyway, enough background info, and leading up to my current project...
A guy had a single occupant rowing skuller on consignment locally for $175.00, for 3 months, I was the only person who asked about it; then the price went to $100.00, and again no other interested parties...so right after Christmas the Mrs. saw they were asking $75.00, so she called and offered $50.00, and they sold it to her.
It's 17'+ and looks like it may have fallen off the top of a vehicle and landed on the bow.
My job will be to completely restore approximately 10" of top of the bow and about 5" on the bottom by doing hand layout fiber glassing (I prefer chopped strand mat for it's adhesive qualities) and then either restoring it as a rowing skuller or redesigning it for either kayaking or putting an electric trolling motor on it for fishing in the waterways where gas/diesel engines are prohibited.

ETA: I have problems with my right shoulder (compound break to the clavicle/hairline fracture to the scapula at 12), and one is supposed to paddle a kayak/canoe not by using your shoulders, but by using your hips turning from side to side so not to cause shoulder socket damage, yet this isn't possible for me either as I'm now fused at the waist.

A regular skuller rowing properly puts the work on the legs as push offs and the upper arms and biceps do the rowing work.
However, the costs of new oars for a skuller start at about $450.00 and go up from there. ::)
This is one reason I may go with an electric trolling motor; I have a 16'+ converted sailing snipe, with the mast removed, and the drop keel replaced with a simple 6" keel that does about 6 knots on an old 39lb thrust trolling motor and draws about 9", but I'm wanting something I don't have to load on a boat trailer, can be dragged through sand into and out of the water, and draws less than 5" in the water. ;)

That's when mine quits being my "smart phone" and starts being my "smartypants phone".

12 years ago, I started a little "work-at-home" business sewing a couple of baby carriers I designed.  Fast forward, I'm now one of the last carrier manufacturers in the USA who does custom work, including custom fitting and appliques, plus offers a carrier that will fit up to an average sized 7 year old (popular for kids with special needs).  There was a lot of red tape with product testing several years back and hundreds of carrier manufacturers folded instead of paying the large fees for testing.  I stuck it out because my dh was in nursing school and it was our livelihood.  I've made about 2000 (all by hand and one of a kind/custom) and sent them all over the world, so I'm pretty proud of it.  I feel a little squeamish about listing the name here.  That said, I'm not sure I "like" to sew.  While I appreciate that I am good at it, my mom was a home-ec teacher and MADE me learn.  It does pay the bills.

My guilty pleasure is writing fanfiction. I like taking characters from comedies and putting them into dangerous, real life situations where they have to 'sink or swim'.  If you want to check me out; I'm wenn9366 on fanfiction.net  My husband wants to know why I don't make up my own stuff and write for money.  Someday...someday....

So many things I love to do... never off time to do them. I sew, crochet, embroidery, read, so many things.
I love spending time with my grandchildren, and introducing them to things, most Granny's would not, like snakes. I have a passion for Redtail Boas, and have the honor of having a few.
I don't want your life. . . I have one and sometimes it sucks. Why would I want another?

I had to go back and change my rating for this to "Winner!" - the fact that you're doing custom carriers up to sizes for 7 year old's for special needs/physically handicapped is simply brilliant, and I for one am so thankful that you didn't give up and fold as most of the other companies did, and went through with having your products tested is just TEH AWESOMENESS on the coolest product design I've seen in years.
Thank you so much for showing us this, it's an amazing thing to see in this day and age!  ;) :-*
